CORTINA TRAIL, NEW RECORD, UNDER THE BANNER OF ANTONIO MARTINEZ PEREZ AND ELISA DESCO

The Spaniard and the Piemonte native mark the second day of La Sportiva Lavaredo Ultra Trail, winning the 48 km trail race in record time. This evening the LUT: 120 kms and 5,800 metres elevation gain

Cortina d'Ampezzo (Belluno), 25 June 2021

The second day of La Sportiva Lavaredo Ultra Trail sees another record. Indeed a double record. After the Spaniard Alex Garcia Carrillo set a new record time yesterday 24 June in the Cortina Skyrace, today too both male and female race times recorded in previous editions were outdone. The context is the Cortina Trail, which started and finished in Cortina in the central Corso Italia, 48 kms long and 2,600 metres elevation gain: 1,200 runners (out of 1,350 registered athletes) who set out on the magnificently evocative route which took them around Tofane, grazing Col Rosà and climbing Val Travenanzes to reach Col dei Bos, and then proceeding in the shadow of Averau and Nuvolau, passing the Giau pass, close to Forcella Ambrizzola, rifugio Croda da Lago and lake d’Ajal before reaching the finish line.
First to cross the finish line at the foot of Cortina’s bell tower was Antonio Martinez Perez: 4h17’14” read the chronometer, a new record for the race. A progressive race for the Alicante native who was in the lead group for the first hour and a half until putting his foot to the floor and becoming unreachable for the other runners. Scandinavia took the second and third places on the podium: silver for the Norwegian Jo Forseth Indgaard (who reached the finish line in 4h23’41”) and bronze for the Finn Mårten Bostr öm (4h26’31”). The first Italian runner Marco Piccin, from San Fior in Treviso, finished sixth in 4h51’01”.

“In the last four months I’ve been training with only this race in mind”, says Antonio Martinez Perez who lowered by over 3’ the previous record set by USA native Zach Miller in 2018 (4h 20' 24"). “I’m really thrilled with this success achieved here in this fabulous environment that I’ve seen for the first time. After the first hour and a half of the race, I forced the pace and was alone: from then on I thought only about pushing forward, feeding and hydrating myself without thinking about the other runners. It went very well!”
In the women’s race, Italy took the lead. Standing out among the runners was Piemonte native Elisa Desco who lowered by over 12’ the previous record set by USA native Hillary Allen in 2018. The several times mountain runner winner as well Sky Marathon champion in 2014 finished with a time of 5h06’57”. Second and third places, both Polish, were far behind: Ursula Paprocka (5h24’19”) and Katarzyna Wilk (5h25’43”).

“Last year I competed in the Virtual Lavaredo Ultra Trail and I loved it. But being here this year is another thing entirely, it’s fantastic” says Elisa Desco. “Participating was not a foregone conclusion and neither was winning because last week I had a sprain and going downhill was tricky: on the downhill stretches, I had to exercise full control because I really wanted to finish”.
This evening at 11 pm the key race of the four days of La Sportiva Lavaredo Ultra Trail, the LUT takes place: 120 kms and 5,800 metres elevation gain (starting and finishing in Cortina) with 1,350 runners. The time limit is 30 hours.
Tomorrow morning at 8 the second edition of the UltraDolomites takes place starting in Sesto (Bolzano) and finishing in Cortina with 80 kms and 4,100 metres elevation gain.Besides the title sponsor La Sportiva, other important brands also support the event: Parmigiano Reggiano, Buff, Petzl, La Cooperativa di Cortina, Rudy Project, Garmin, San Benedetto, Elleerre, Fabbrica di Pedavena, Eolo, Cortinabanca, Astoria, Reflexallen and Ospedale Cortina.
